Planetary Aspects — The Geometry of Your Birth Chart
Astrology is geometry. The angular distance between two planets — called an aspect — determines whether their energies harmonize, clash, or merge. A 0° conjunction fuses two planets into one force. A 90° square creates friction that drives action. A 120° trine flows with ease. Mastering aspects is what separates someone who knows their Sun sign from someone who can actually read a chart.

Planetary Aspects: The Geometry That Runs Your Chart
Two planets in isolation tell you two separate stories. But when those planets form a precise geometric angle to each other — an aspect — they enter into a dialogue that can define entire chapters of your life. Aspects are the connective tissue of chart interpretation. A natal chart without aspects would be a collection of disconnected traits. With aspects, those traits interact, amplify, conflict, and evolve into a coherent psychological portrait.
The Five Major Aspects
Western astrology recognizes five major aspects, each carrying its own quality of interaction. The conjunction (0°) fuses two planets into a single unified force — neither can act without involving the other. The sextile (60°) creates easy, cooperative energy between planets that share compatible elements. The square (90°) generates friction and tension — uncomfortable but highly motivating. The trine (120°) flows with effortless harmony between planets in the same element. The opposition (180°) creates polarity — two planets in constant negotiation across the chart axis.
"Hard aspects build character. Easy aspects reveal it. The most interesting charts have both." — A principle that holds across most astrological traditions
Orbs: How Exact Does an Aspect Need to Be?
Aspects don't need to be mathematically perfect to operate — they work within a range of degrees called an orb. Tighter orbs mean stronger, more prominent aspects; wider orbs create softer background influences. Most astrologers use orbs of 6–10° for major aspects between personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars), and tighter orbs of 2–4° for outer planet aspects and minor aspects. The conjunction and opposition are typically given the widest orbs due to their potency.
Applying vs. Separating Aspects
An aspect is applying when the faster planet is moving toward the exact angle with the slower planet — this is considered stronger, with more unresolved potential energy. A separating aspect means the exact angle has already passed and the planets are moving apart — the energy is more integrated, the lessons more processed. In natal charts this distinction matters less than in transits and synastry, but it adds nuance to interpretation.
Aspect Patterns: When Three or More Planets Connect
When multiple aspects connect three or more planets, they form aspect patterns — some of the most powerful signatures in natal astrology. A Grand Trine (three planets in mutual trine) creates a self-contained circuit of ease in one element. A T-Square (two planets in opposition with a third squaring both) creates a pressure triangle that drives enormous achievement through tension. A Grand Cross (four planets in two oppositions and four squares) creates constant, multi-directional friction that demands integration across four life areas.
- Conjunction (0°) — Fusion, intensity, unified planetary force
- Sextile (60°) — Opportunity, cooperation, supportive flow
- Square (90°) — Tension, challenge, motivating friction
- Trine (120°) — Harmony, ease, natural talent and flow
- Opposition (180°) — Polarity, projection, push-pull dynamics
Reading Aspects in Your Own Chart
When you pull up your natal chart, aspects are usually shown as lines crossing the center of the chart wheel — red lines for hard aspects (squares, oppositions) and blue or green lines for soft aspects (trines, sextiles). Most chart software also provides an aspect grid listing every planetary pair and the angle between them. Start with aspects to your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant, as these are the most personally significant. Then work outward to the inner planets before tackling the outer planet aspects, which operate more generationally.
